Clear team distinction

(zenstar) #121

Imagine the teams are hired by two rival corporations if you want. Or underhand Corp vs Government hired peacekeeping force.

At the end of the day, as long as we can tell the 2 teams apart it doesn’t matter who is behind what. If we have team colours then we have Red vs Blue. As long as you can tell who is on your team and who is on the enemy team then we have A vs B.

(iwound) #122

would you play a game based on a civil war between the telly tubbies.

same reason i didnt like brink. i had no empathy with the characters. mercs are bad guys.
who is fighting for some freedom. it matters.

(zenstar) #123

If it was a good team shooter? Yes I would.

EDIT:
Story is kinda off topic in this thread. Story reasons for each side being there should probably be another thread.

(.Chris.) #124

That’s the whole point, at thing’s stand we can’t easily tell them apart, having two identical teams is a big reason as to why this is the case.

(zenstar) #125

Umm… i agree we need team distinction. If you look at my posts I’ve been saying team colours are required. The most recent posts of mine were pointing out that the backstory for the teams doesn’t matter as long as we can tell them apart. So I think we’re saying the same thing and we’ve just misinterpereted something recently.

(Dormamu) #126

I think the story maters, you need a story, a god story can help you sell the game (look at Halo). You can use the story to sell the SP experience after the release.
I know that two teams means more work for SD, but the easy way is not always the best way. Your game will face more scrutiny than your previous games combined. Every part will be analyzed, broken to pieces and thrashed. DB needs to stand out and pass all those tests with flying colors. The 1 team and no story attached to them (even if is not an Oscar story, you need one) are holes in your armor.
“You are 1 shot away from greatness… don’t fk this up! :D” <= print this and post it on your front door

I’m not colour blind and he still looks friendly…

…in all serious though it’s a nice touch, but the colours don’t stand out at all, I still can’t tell friend from foe.

(warbie) #129

Same. If player models are going to be the same on both teams then they need to stand out a la Halo and TF2. There’s no way around this that I can see other than floating icons everywhere, which ideally we wouldn’t have at all (even icons for objectives and grenades clutter the look of a game) or by having distinct teams.

(zenstar) #130

SP = single player?
There isn’t going to be a single player experience.
This is going to be a team multiplayer game. but again: story is off topic in this thread.

(iwound) #131

if the two teams have different uniforms, that IS the story, dont over-think it.
think cs, no paperback novel but you know whats going on between the two factions.
its like an unwritten story. the player can write his own in his head.

its all inter-connected. backstory - uniform - reason to fight.
one glance and you know all the above. stories help with memory.

re the added colours. remove them, they do nothing except make you look like you shop at Benetton.
the blue guy looks like he left his clothes in the wash with a blue towel. his mums gonna kill him.

2 separate models for each team. you can keep the faces just change the padding, head gear etc to stuff thats different enough
to show a different silhouette.

(Ashog) #132

I vote for different team models. In the end, this is just a matter of money.

After the release if their is time, money and demand, i think on the long run. I don’t expect DB to ship with SP, a pay once SP experience would bring more/some money, introduce new chars, keep the single players hooked,.etc. (i constantly force myself to think that DB will be a masterpiece :D)
At the moment the story you tell in your head (as iwound said) about the 2 teams CDA and mercenaries  is the right way to go, with every match played you add another chapter, is a never-ending story until the SP is shipped (1year after DB is released  ).
I will be glad if they make some kind of Brink characters/factions with some red/blue/yellow/orange/etc. “sprinkled” over their equipment. In my point of view, the teams need to be different in a way that even a noob (me :D) would be able to immediately distinguish friends from foe at close and mid range, with some doubt at long distances.

(INF3RN0) #134

I agree. It doesn’t have to be that significantly different as long as things are visually distinguishable. Two team models also means more gear for the game store, so in the end it could balance out the cost.

(tokamak) #135

Different team models cuts the player´s freedom to customise in half so I can understand why they don´t do that. And I don´t think´s necessary either.

(iwound) #136

How so? What customisation?

re: colours. the orange marks actually look nice but im on 800x600 and at a distance all models look brown.
my point being is it that it all starts to blend at medium distance.
unless you put a substantial amount of colour in one area on a model ie a blue disc
the question is. is this too big a distraction from the game or theme.

(DarkangelUK) #137

Is that under the complete assumption that if they made double the models then they’d make half the customizations for them?

(tokamak) #138

Yes. 50% to each team rather than 100% to each team. Just like with Brink really.

It also takes away from the connection and attachment a player may feel to his character.

(DarkangelUK) #139

Well at least you admit it’s an assumption.

(iwound) #140

thats still the same amount. if your right you get half as much err! twice.
but youll have two custom dudes a goodie and a baddie. maybe customables are team switchable. but two factions equals twice as much potential revenue.
and if its a money spinner for SD then im sure theyll produce enough to keep people happy.
and anyway thats long term.
