It’s a rather frustrating issue. Seems that most of us lose our data when there is a lost server connection. Hopefully some sort of catch-all transaction on the user data can make it into the next patch…!

Well, no updates or info for 3 days now. I suppose I will have to start the game over, but if it does it again I am putting brink down for the forseeable future.

The file that stores all the data is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata<user#>\22350\remote\game.save. I’ve started backing this up periodically, but it seems there is no way to restore it because Steam overwrites it. :frowning:

I wonder if you disconnect from the web, get some more XP locally, then close Brink and reconnect…

This has just happened to me as well.

It was some hours ago however and I cant quite recall exactly what I was doing as it occurred.

I remember looking for a server to join, I think it was a “free play” match, but nothing came up. I think I minimised the game window and then it crashed. Upon logging back in, everything was gone.

I am really surprised there has not been an official announcement regarding this immensely crippling bug…or has there? Have it missed it?

Just got this game today. Played for about 6-7 hours and now I am apparently forced to start again. Can only imagine how frustrated the people that have invested days into the game are.

Is there a way to fix this? Can I get my save back? How can I prevent it form happening again? These vital questions need answers.

aw, I just clocked 12 hours of Brink and now I’m afraid of playing it again :x

I think I’ll play other games until it’s fixed.

ps : Even if you can backup the “game.save” file, the checksum won’t be the same and Steam will overwrite it anyway :confused:

I think you guys need to disable Steam Cloud so it stops overwriting it.

Go to the Library > Brink > Rightclick > Properties > Updates Tab > Bottom “Steam Cloud”

Everytime you Start Steam/Brink it will place the save game to the folder means overwrites it.

So Disable it put backups in the folder start the game check if you got the char back save and quit and enable Steam Cloud again to your files get uploaded and saved!

It’s a neat tool imo. i had to format my system last week so i didn’t lost my Char/Settings :slight_smile:

I have lost my characters as well. I was playing on my lvl 16 engineer tonight,had just finished a match and received a message saying the server had shut down. I was still within the game menu but the options for online play were greyed out. I then exited the game via the game menu to see if something happened to my internet connection, connection was fine so I started the game up again. Game started up as if it was the first time, characters gone. Not using any mods, just straight up steam game.

I registered just to reply to this thread.
I was playing a freeplay online match. suddenly, the match ended (for me) and I saw the XP and rewards screen. I clicked on Freeplay again but the Search button was grayed and I couldn’t press it.
I quit the game normally from the main menu. Tried to restart it, and I was presented with the Save The Ark/Escape The Ark Screen. I restarted Steam, and tried restarting Brink several times but had the same screen (I did noticed a very fast flashing white screen then Brink Logo displayed before the main screen appear).
and now, THE FIX:
-First: (if you already have a Back up for your save files, Skip this step)
go to your save folder, right click (game.save)and go to properties->Previous Versions (tab). if you have windows restore turned on (lucky u!) you’ll find an older version of the overwritten save file. select the older version and click copy to get it back to your computer.

-Now do as (ruskor) said: turn of cloud for Brink, copy the restored Old save file to it’s location (replace the new one). Start Brink, you should get back your character now!!! (although it may be not very up-to-date, based on the date of the file you restored)…now exit the game, turn on Steam Cloud again. BAM you have everything ok again!!!
