Aren't shotguns a bit too OP?

Having that much power in a single shot can’t be properly balanced if you can shoot it reliably at high damage from across the map. Does anybody here remember when you could fire shotgun slugs across the map without any drop at all or loss of power back in Bad Company 2? I do. Peak, shoot, peak shoot from any range. I know you aren’t asking for that but at some point you simply have to reduce the power from a shotgun while also keeping it powerful for new players who aren’t confident in their aim yet to be somewhat successful with.[/quote]
No, I haven’t played Bad Company 2 and have a hard time imagining why a shotgun without damage falloff would be a problem. There’s still spread, which reduces damage over distance.
As for taking pot shots from across the map:

  1. It will take a long time and lots of ammo, making it not viable on offense
  2. On defense you can still hard counter such shotgunners with sniper rifles. Seriously, do you think such a shotgunner would be a match for half a sniper ?
  3. Abundance of medics

So what you’re saying shotguns are only meant for newbies ?

EDIT: I watched some youtube videos of BC2 and apparently pre-nerf they used slugs, not pellets like in Dirty Bomb. Not sure why BC2 would be relevant.

I can’t even find an aimbot video for shotguns! It’s like absolutely nobody cares about shotguns in FPS games. I hear CS:GO rewards shotgun kills with $900, as opposed to typical $300, which is… an admission of defeat.

Only when you turn a corner and eat a face of lead 'cause your resident aura only hits when you surprise them. :^)

The only person I’ve ever seen do extremely well in a competitive match with a shotgun is Hollywood aka Holly. He’s done pretty well on Aura with a shotgun on a few occasions. But since he’s a medic and range is king in competitive matches it’s not consistent.

Because you want to increase the range of shotguns which is what BC2 had built in if you used slugs so the comparison could be made. And at first there wasn’t any damage falloff and the technique I described was all half the servers did due to just how good it was.

Not sure why you have never noticed almost every single FPS game made has shotguns work pretty much the same way and typically are more of a starter weapon and only good in a specific situation as opposed to an all around weapon that requires more consistent aim. This isn’t a new thing to DB.

I have only 2 problems with shotguns:

  • They reload way to fast (not exactly “high-risk high-reward”)
  • There’s not penalty for kangaroo jumping&hipfiring them (unlike other guns [I get they should melt your face off at point plank but bunnyhopping Auras 1-banging me at range when I play as Sparks is annoying when I have to dump at least half a mag in them])

  1. Reload is slow as f*ck if you use up all of your shots.
  2. There is a penalty, as your spread increases. It only works because of the high speeds of most of the shotgun mercs.

Shotguns are about as niche as it gets. Defending the first point on terminal or underground? Take a shotgun.

Outside of that? They…kind of suck. I mean dont get me wrong you can make them work, but a smart player is going to see you have one and just start back peddling to make your damage dwindle down to around my penis length (not much).

Maybe map design is to blame ? Maybe there are not enough corridors and cover ?
