Marking the 25th anniversary of: Doom
For free? Yes! Well, sort of. The game has been modded as crazy, so it’s possible the get the full Doom experience updated for the 21st century, for free, with heaps of quality content. The only thing you can’t play are the original levels (but despair not, see below.)
For the engine you can use GZDoom (for best graphics) or Zandronum (for best multiplayer support).
For a Doom compatible main gamefile (IWAD) use Freedoom.
You can go ahead and test that.
$ gzdoom -iwad freedoom1.wad
I find the level design excellent, but it does not look, sound or feel like Doom. Let’s fix that!
The mod Brutal Doom brings the original Doom enemies with enhanced AI and graphics and cranks up the graphical violence and intensity of gameplay a bit.
The Doom High Resolution Texture Project makes it look like the original just better.
For an original soundtrack you can use the IDKFA album and metal remakes.
If you want some level design that distinctly feels like the original, I’d recommend ‘Doom The Way ID Did’ and it’s sequel.
So f. ex to play DTWID with Brutal Doom, highres textures and the remake of the original Doom soundtrack, you can do:
$ gzdoom -iwad freedoom1.wad -file DTWID.wad bd21.pk3 zdoom-dhtp.pk3 IDKFAv2.wad
We use freedoom1, because DTWID is a doom1 map package. Note that order of execution is important! Files internally contain namespaces that can overwrite each other, from left to right, which means you can experience strange behavior if you specify them in the wrong order. Don’t be too worried or confused about it though. Generally this just means that you want to place your textures near the end of the line. Here I have placed the music at the end, but it does not matter as it will not overwrite any graphics from the texture package, since it is defined as music for the first Doom game in its internal namespace. (You can learn more over at the ZDoom Wiki.)
Also, check out the singleplayer mod Wolfenstein: Blades of Agony or if you are in the mood for some arena shooter action Quake Champions: Doom Edition.
And there you have it. Doom for free!
Lego the Hobbit free until 15th of December 10:00 AM pacific time: https://www.humblebundle.com/store/lego-the-hobbit
That game is one of my favorite old-time adventures, though I’m not fond of the remastered graphics. Luckily you can turn it off.
That’s strange, it’s €5 (a 75% discount) here.
Seems the ran out of free copies before the deadline. They said there was a limit.
